BSkyB operates Europe's largest pay-tv satellite broadcasting platform with dedicated news, film, sports, general entertainment and specialist channels as well as an extensive range of interactive services. BSkyB operates an open access platform with many channels and services provided by 3rd parties. It launched its digital service in October 1998 and now broadcasts in excess of 500 TV and radio channels to more than 10 million UK and Irish homes. BSkyB makes use of DVB-S and MPEG-2 compliant products and in 2006 launched a range of HDTV services using DVB-S2 and H264.
