TM-MIMO
The main target of this Study Mission is to determine the maximum spectral efficiency and throughput that can be realised to stationary aerials for possible future terrestrial broadcasting systems employing MIMO. (MIMO for portable and mobile has been covered in NGH studies)
The Study Mission will also consider the additional complexity (and additional costs across the whole broadcast chain) necessary to achieve any potential gains above and beyond the existing technologies.
In particular the Study Mission shall report on:
- The likely design, construction and appearance of a MIMO domestic antenna to achieve the spectral efficiency gains and the cost of such an antenna relative to an existing terrestrial antenna.
- Co-existence of existing DVB-T/T2 broadcasts with new MIMO broadcasts and the implications on network frequency planning.
- The implications of MIMO on a domestic terrestrial installation, such as new cabling requirements, additional RF mixers/muxers/amplifiers, etc.
- The related consequences on a receiver RF design, such as the number of tuners required and the number of external connectors, particularly for PVRs, including the cost relative to a DVB-T2 design.
- The implications of MIMO on a broadcast installation, such as additional antenna arrays, additional RF amplifiers, additional power consumption, etc.
The resulting report of this Study Mission should enable DVB to have a well-informed discussion about further steps (if any) and the timing of these.
