Generic Data Broadcasting & Service Information Protocols

The group has two main working areas:

  • Metadata
Definition of all information pertaining to the location, identification and characterisation of DVB services and programme events. The group also specifies mechanisms and protocols for the conveying of such information.

  • Generic Data Broadcast
Definition of mechanisms and protocols for the broadcast of non-audiovisual content for both streaming and non-streaming modes. This includes the case of tunnelling for other protocols (e.g. IP).

The above is laid out in the restated and amended Terms of Reference of the group which were approved by the TM in January 2003.

The group has been active since the beginning of the DVB Project (see history outline below) and held its 50th meeting in early 2002. It has produced some of the core specifications of today's DVB system (e.g. Service Information, Data Broadcast, Software Update; see below). As the group's working areas are at the foundation of the system, the end of its activities is not foreseen.

GBS History

NOTE: Dear colleagues, the below history is largely based on assumptions and guesswork. I would therefore like to ask those of you who are by far more knowledgeable about this to provide the necessary information to help make the history table more accurate. Thank you very much, --Alexander Adolf

 Group History

1991 In the course of the work of the European Launching Group (ELG) for digital television, the group was founded as V2 SI (V2? Service Information)
1993 With the transition from the ELG to the DVB Project and the restructuring resulting from the DVB's Memorandum of Understanding, the group became an ad-hoc group of the technical module and was called SI-DAT (Service Information and Data Broadcasting)
2001 After consolidation of its first suite of specifications, the DVB restated and amended the Memorandum of Understanding. The goal was to widen the scope and embrace the convergence of the different types of digital media. In the course of this transition the group was renamed to GBS (Generic Data Broadcasting and Service Information Protocols).
