DVB-T2 Lite trial for Copenhagen
Video contribution and distribution solutions provider T-VIPS has partnered with broadcast technology developer ProTelevision to develop a joint DVB-T2-Lite transmission solution.
The solution is designed to enable operators to deploy DVB-T2-Lite for the distribution of video and audio content to mobile devices and the Danish operator Open Channel a subsidiary of U-Media will be the first to trial the system
Open Channel was awarded a license to commence a DVB-T2-Lite trial on the 30th August. The trial will use the 1.7MHz VHF (DAB) Channel 9D in the Greater Copenhagen region and include a large number of radio services.
Kenneth Wenzel, CEO, Open Channel, said: “As far as we’re concerned there are some fundamental advantages of DVB-T2 Lite over DAB, which means that the future of digital radio will be based upon DVB-T2 Lite. Using this profile saves battery life at the receiver, enables the transmission of many more channels, provides increased robustness, and can easily be retro-fitted to the existing DVB-T2 infrastructure.

DVB-T2 trial begins
A small Copenhagen based company, Open Channel, has begun broadcasting trial DVB-T2 transmissions on UHF Ch 67 in the Greater Copenhagen area, reports Broadband TV News.
Open Channel have produced their own transmitter for the trial with the cooperation of Pro Television and DekTec.
Denmark, which uses DVB-T currently, has no space for HD transmissions on its SD based multiplexes, but by changing to DVB-T2 the capacity could be doubled and HD services provided.
During the initial phase of the trial, broadcasts are from a single antenna radiating 600 Watt ERP from a 100 metres high antenna (330 feet) on the TDC Tower on Borups Alle in the centre of Copenhagen. The MUX is known locally as MUXKBH-2 and the TV channels transmitted are the same as those available on MUXKBH UHF channel 35, Kanal København, Familie TV and G-TV.
When more DVB-T2 set top boxes are available on the Danish market, Open Channel will expand the broadcast set up to include several broadcasting positions in Roskilde and/or Hillerød using an SFN. At the same time the main transmitter power will be increased to 2kW ERP.

Digital Switch-over successful

The recent complete analogue TV switchover to a digital DTT in Denmark has proved to be very successful.
In a poll conducted by Gallup, it was reported that only 43,000 viewers (out of a population of 5.5 million) had problems. Of these, it was found that only 6000 were totally unprepared for the change.
During the changeover weekend, (31st October to the 1st November), the call centre set up to answer problems on the launch of the DTT service, received only 4,000 telephone calls instead of the expected 15,000.
The public service broadcaster DR’s call centre received around 800 calls.

Digital Services in Denmark
Plans are well underway to provide viewers in Denmark with new television services on the DTT platform, says Digitag in a recent comprehensive web letter on the Digital TV situation in the country.
Cable is the leading television platform at the moment with a penetration of over 60% of TV households. Currently 18% rely on the terrestrial platform for primary TV viewing but its actual use is much higher because satellite delivery, which is extensively used, does not provide access to local and regional services.
At present only limited DTT services are available but even with this early limitation, 500,000 DTT receivers have been sold which translates to a penetration of 21%.
The first DTT multiplex was launched in April 2006 using MPEG-2 and this will be joined by a second on the 1st November 2009 and it will use MPEG-4 AVC compression.
Four multiplexes will eventually be in operation, three by the 1st November 2009 and the fourth on the 1st November 2010 after analogue switch off has been completed in neighbouring countries.
The Radio and television board has called for all four multiplexes to eventually use MPEG-4 AVC compression and multiplex 1 must change to MPEG-4 by 2012.
Analogue switch off will take place on the 31st October 2009.
